Gov. Gavin Newsom gave an update Wednesday with the latest on the state's response to both the coronavirus pandemic and the massive wildfires burning throughout the state.

Newsom began his briefing Tuesday discussing the state’s efforts to house the homeless amid the pandemic.

He then pivoted to wildfires burning in the state. So far in 2020, 3.4 million acres have burned in California. At least 25 people have died in the fires and more than 4,200 structures have been destroyed.

He cited the record-setting fires as another reason for the state to 'double down' on combating climate change, which he said is a 'cause that knows no political party.'

'We need to reconcile that fact that there are no Democratic thermometers and no Republican thermometers,' he said. 'There is fact and there's reality as well as observed evidence. It's not a belief system, it's an acknowledgment: the facts are the facts. It's not a question of one's belief.'

His climate change comments come on the heels of President Donald Trump's visit to Sacramento County earlier this week. During his visit, Trump attended a briefing with fire and emergency officials, during which he blamed poor forest management for the massive fires and said, 'it'll start getting cooler, you just watch.'

Newsom said Wednesday that the state would be making announcements 'soon' regarding theme parks and other industries, but he did not specify which sectors would be affected.

“We will be making announcements soon as it relates to theme parks, amusement parks, making announcements soon as it relates to some areas, industries, as well as sectors and putting out additional guidelines,' he said during his briefing.

“I’m not here today to make that presentation but want folks to know we are actively working in a number of sectors and will be making public the fruits of those negotiations and those efforts very, very shortly,' Newsom added.

Newsom was also asked about California's troubled Employment Development Department, which has struggled to handle the influx of unemployment claims during the pandemic. The agency is also facing fraud concerns.

Newsom said a detailed report into EDD is nearly complete, and he is now waiting for the EDD to respond to a strike team's findings and to come up with solutions to fix some of the problems.

On Tuesday, more California counties moved out of the state's most stringent COVID-19 reopening tier. Because Inyo, Marin and Tehama counties are now in the red tier, several types of businesses are able to again operate indoors with modifications.

COVID-19 is from the coronavirus family, which includes the common cold but also more serious illnesses like SARS and MERS.

For most people, COVID-19 causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness and death.
